RedCap is the 5G network technology derivate that is tailored to serve IoT and wearable devices. It is part of the 3GPP technical standards for 5G since Release 17. First products are already available and many more will come (see e.g. here).
Compared to previous 4G network derivates for IoT, e.g. LTE-M and NB-IoT, it is not as focused on extremely narrowband devices and use cases. Instead, it is a more balanced compromise between reduced device complexity, longer device battery life, and – yes – lower bandwidth than 5G. But the supported bandwidth is still high enough that e.g. wearables (watches, fitness trackers, smart rings) and surveillance cameras can be supported. This makes it even more attractive.
RedCap should soon be included in the 3GPP USIM/USAT test specifications (TS 31.121 / TS 31.124), based on the contained 5G SA test. GCF prepared to be ready for RedCap USIM/USAT certification testing in WI-508-NR and WI-509-NR when the test specs are final and PTCRB should follow soon.
COMPRION has already started working on RedCap test benches for its SIMfony USIM/USAT mobile device testing solutions. The tests will be available for the two COMPRION network simulator partners Anritsu and Rohde & Schwarz. The expected launch for Anritsu MT8000A will be as early as July 2024, for Rohde & Schwarz CMX500 OBT just a bit later.
