COMPRION Offers New Feature for Decoding OTA Sessions

Over-the-Air (OTA) communication is key for provisioning mobile payment services. As paying by phone involves personal banking data, testing is absolutely crucial. Therefore, COMPRION has created the new OTA Remote Management Translator which helps to check the data flow between the SIM card – as the Secure Element within the cell phone – and the network and to make these services more secure and reliable.

Companies such as Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and service providers sometimes need to change the content of a SIM card when it is already in the consumer’s smartphone, for example when they introduce new applications like a mobile wallet. They use Over-The-Air (OTA) communication as a core mechanism for secure loading, configuring and deleting SIM card applications. In order to protect data integrity as well as subscribers' privacy, data is secured by encrypted sessions.

Test engineers who want to detect and solve problems in the OTA communication chain face the challenge of understanding the encrypted commands. This is the reason why COMPRION has created the new OTA Remote Management Translator that enables the user to view the complete OTA communication. It decrypts and unwraps the data packages, sets them to the right order of command and response pairs and translates them into a human readable format. This new feature is available for COMPRION's spy and handset test tools.

Ralph Kamp, Product Manager at COMPRION states: “This feature is a crucial control instrument for the MNOs. They want to make sure that the smartphone and the SIM card process OTA information coming from the network side correctly, for example by installing the app in the right way. Only through sufficient testing can the MNOs ensure that their partners (banks, service providers) and even more important, the consumers can activate the desired services and benefit from comprehensive security and crucial data protection.”

The new feature will be presented for the first time at the Mobile World Congress 2015, stand #6I20 using COMPRION’s trace tool MiniMove.
