Imagine this: In your private life, you use a regular smartphone with a subscription from a standard operator. Your company, however, relies on fast and secure access to its IT infrastructure via a 5G network. It uses dedicated, optimized, and secure non-public network slices. These slices allow confidential internal communication and access to low-latency collaboration tools.
While your personal apps continue to run on the public network, you need to access the company’s non-public network slices in parallel.
That’s where SSIM comes in.
What is SSIM?
SSIM stands for Slice Subscriber Identity Module and was introduced with 3GPP Release 18 as a new application format for the UICC (aka: SIM card) by the mobile standards community.
You may already know:
The SSIM is an application designed for working alongside the USIM, specifically for Network Slice-Specific Authentication and Authorization (NSSAA). It provides a mechanism that enables a user device to authenticate and be authorized for access to particular network slices via credentials stored and managed on the smart card while not interfering with the USIM controlled use of consumer apps and public network slices.
What is it for?
It ensures that your device knows exactly which slices it is allowed to access, separates corporate from personal traffic, and automatically enforces company policies.
With an SSIM, a device can:
Why Network Slicing Matters for 5G
Network slicing lets operators create multiple virtual networks with different performance, security, and service characteristics - all running on the same physical infrastructure.
Industry Use Cases
| Sector | Example |
| Industry 4.0 | Dedicated slices for machinery with guaranteed low latency |
| Healthcare | Secure access for telemedicine and emergency services |
| Automotive | Slice-based V2X communication for autonomous driving |
| Public Safety | Encrypted communication over isolated 5G slices |
