A Breakthrough in eSIM Diagnostics

COMPRION launches eSIM Tracer, a trace tool for efficient troubleshooting and comprehensive diagnostics of communication between permanently soldered eSIMs and mobile devices. First available for use with Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. chipsets.

With the new eSIM Tracer, COMPRION presents a ground-breaking software solution that for the first time enables comprehensive recording and analysis of communication between mobile devices and soldered eSIMs (Embedded Subscriber Identity Modules). ‘In an aera where more and more devices are equipped with built-in SIM cards - so-called eSIMs or iSIMs - the eSIM Tracer offers a much-needed solution for mobile network operators (MNOs) and chip/device manufacturers to precisely analyze problems before market launch or in the field and thus identify and eliminate critical causes of errors,’ explains Olaf Rethmeier, Product Manager eSIM Test Solution at COMPRION.

Overcoming the obstacles

The particular challenge with eSIMs is that they are permanently soldered and therefore no conventional, physical SIM card interface is available. This means that traditional diagnostic methods for analyzing the communication between the card and the mobile device fail. However, as analysis is still essential and trial and error processes are lengthy and inadequate, COMPRION has developed the eSIM Tracer.

The solution consists of universal monitoring software and specific APDU tracing adapters that can be seamlessly integrated into existing test environments. The APDU tracing adapters are specially tailored to the respective chipset model of the end device and thus enable communication data to be recorded. As a first step, an adapter compatible with Qualcomm Technologies processors was developed, as these are used in a wide range of mobile devices. Adapters for other chipsets and manufacturers are being planned, which will extend the use of the eSIM tracer to a larger number of devices.

Live data recording and visualization of communication

The eSIM Tracer software accesses the communication data flowing between the eSIM and the mobile radio module in real time. The recorded APDU commands are structured and displayed in a clear view that enables a detailed analysis of the interactions between the device and eSIM. This visualization includes context-sensitive translations, making complex technical data easy to understand.

With the eSIM Tracer, COMPRION is closing a gap that was previously problematic due to the lack of standardization in the industry. By developing the adapter in-house and working closely with manufacturers such as Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., COMPRION has created a future-proof solution that meets the industry's requirements for efficiency and flexibility.
