The Consumer Device Core Specification GSMA SGP.22 has now reached Phase 3. As part of this development, COMPRION has created new device tests for the corresponding Test Specification GSMA SGP.23-2.

These tests verify the LPA (Local Profile Assistant) functionality in mobile devices and are now available. Manufacturers of mobile devices and modules can already use these tests today to optimally prepare for later GCF/PTCRB certification of their devices in a test laboratory.

Background on GSMA SGP.23

The GSMA Consumer Devices Specification SGP.23 consists of three parts:

• SGP.23-1: Test Specification for the eUICC
• SGP.23-2: Test Specification for the Device/LPA
• SGP.23-3: Test Specification for Servers (SM-DP+, SM-DS)

For SGP.22 Phase 2, COMPRION already provides a GCF/PTCRB-qualified test tool, which is currently used for Device/LPA certification. With the new version, the changes and extensions introduced in Phase 3 are now taken into account.

What Do the New Device Tests Verify?

The Local Profile Assistant (LPA) enables local eSIM operations on a device, such as initiating a profile download or activating/deactivating profiles.
The new tests check whether the LPA functionality is correctly implemented in the device.

The Path to Conformance Certification

The process of turning these tests into official conformance tests takes place in several steps:

1. Change Requests (CRs) to the new testing scope are accepted by the responsible GCF/PTCRB working group.
2. These changes are incorporated into a new Work Item or Request for Test.
3. The tests are implemented based on these changes.
4. The tests are validated using two devices, and logs are provided - after which the test tool is considered validated.

Steps 1 and 3 have been completed, but validation is still pending due to a unavailability of test devices. With the completion of the test case implementation, COMPRION is well prepared to perform validation and activate the new work item at GCF and the RFTs at PTCRB.

LPA Simulation with COMPRION Network Bridge

In addition, COMPRION offers an LPA simulation according to GSMA SGP.22 Phase 3 as part of its software tool COMPRION Network Bridge. This emulates a device with LPA functionality and can, among other things, initiate a profile download within the SGP.22 Phase 3 ecosystem.

The correct operation of the LPA simulation has already been verified using the newly implemented device tests. This also demonstrated the validity of the device tests themselves—particularly valuable since no commercially available devices with integrated LPA are currently on the market.

Thus, COMPRION Network Bridge can virtually replace real devices within the GSMA eSIM Consumer Devices Ecosystem and perform defined profile management operations.
