How to Vastly Improve the Design of NFC Readers

The Challenge

Designing an NFC reader is guided by one basic objective: delivering a stable magnetic field for reliable communication. As you find NFC readers in a wide area of applications involving different materials and shapes, this can be tricky. Let’s say you want the door handle of your company’s next car model to work as a bulletproof NFC reader. Considering material, form, and coating, you have many options that can have a negative impact on the magnetic field strength and performance. Consequently, measuring and visualizing the magnetic field during the design process is extremely helpful. You see if the design is evolving in the right direction – instead of having to restart from scratch at the end of the design process if NFC communication doesn’t work properly.

The COMPRION Solution

Measure the magnetic field strength of the NFC reader with COMPRION’s Design Validation Center software (combined with the CL Verify A and CL Quantify tools and a robot that moves the antenna). The user-friendly GUI supports you all the way through – from configuring the measurement up to visualizing the results.

Step 1
The working area of the NFC reader is called operating volume. Here, the reader’s magnetic field must be sufficient to guarantee stable communication with the end user device.
With Design Validation Center, you can define a measurement volume where the NFC reader is expected to work and that consists of all test positions approached by the robot.

Step 2
When you have defined the measurement volume, Design Validation Center is ready. Now you can start the measurement: the robot moves the antenna automatically to the individual test positions where the magnetic field strength is measured. You can choose between three options, each using a different test setup:

  • Vector field scan with COMPRION’s unique Vector Field Probe (winner of the SESAMES Award 2017)
  • Loaded field scan
  • Reader sensitivity scan

As a special COMPRION feature, you can even observe the dedicated NFC measurements with the integrated digital live oscilloscope in real time.

Step 3
After the measurement, you can examine the results in detail. Design Validation Center provides you with advanced analyzing and 2D/3D visualizing features. Choose between iso plots, sliced view, heat map, and magnetic field (for measurements with vector field probe) to find the ideal representation of the measuring results for your purpose.

The Conclusion

Don’t worry about the magnetic field strength of your NFC reader anymore! With COMPRION’s Design Validation Center, you can thoroughly evaluate the magnetic field of your NFC reader in the design process, whenever necessary.
